This Way and That

Members of the EMC headed off in different directions over the third weekend of April 2007.

Jim and Faye Enzman, Clay and Debbie Johnston and Martha and I all met in Pensacola Beach on Friday April 20th for the 15th Annual Panhandle British Car Club Association’s Brits on the Bay gathering. That evening's Red Beans and Rice Reception was another great one with folks from all over the Southeast arriving in time for the food and social hour.

Saturday broke bright and early for those of us that decided to be a lay about on Friday afternoon. After car cleaning we all headed over to Admiral Mason Park in Pensacola for the show. The new sight was in great shape for the show with lush green grass. A more perfect sight would have been hard to come-by. Overlooking Pensacola Bay and taking the breeze and the sun, you just can’t beat it.

Walter and Kathy Mashburn were on an extended holiday so the didn’t make it down in their Triumph but did stop by for a visit.

Ballots were distributed and returned with the winners announced at 4:00pm. Jim Enzman was awarded 3rd place in the 741/2 -76 MGB class. Congratulations Jim! People’s Choice Award went to Bill and Melissa Silhan for their 1951 Daimler Empress.

Heading in the other direction was Pat Cashman, spending Saturday in Marshall Texas at the Gene Ponder / RM Auction. Pat indicated there was a great turn out with some of the bidding getting really hot and heavy in East Texas. A large part of the collection went under the gavel and has now been moved to new homes. Pat noted that Mr. Cobra himself, Carroll Shelby made the event.

Other Happenings Around

Blake Sonnier made it up from Lake Charles LA over the weekend to pickup his new project. I’d been contacted by the owner here in Jackson who was clearing his garage of a 1974 MGB GT. I’d gone down a few weeks ago to look over the car and found it to be pretty straight and relatively rust free. Blake and the owner exchanged contacts and arrived at a price and a pickup date. Blake’s regular driver is the 1972 MGB that’s about as yellow as yellow can get. Blake has made our show over the last few years along with the white RB that his wife Kathy drives. I wonder whom the GT will go to? It’s great to see good cars go to deserving homes.

I ran across Jim Trunzler at one of my favorite watering holes this past week. Jim’s picking up some business down at his shop in Crystal Springs MS. He’s recently completed an engine replacement in Al Adam’s 1960 Rover P4 and all indications are that it's running great. We’ll be looking forward to the rollout at Brits by the River ‘07 in September.

I hope that everyone’s been taking advantage of the great weather we’ve been enjoying here of late. Over the weekend after meeting with the Primo’s Early Breakfast Car Club members I took off on a short excursion south of Florence to High Point, to Harrisville and made a left over to Braxton. This was my exploratory back roads run over to the EMC’s upcoming gathering at Mike and Alice Glore’s new place. I had a great run and other than getting lost a couple of times, which ain’t all bad it made for a very refreshing early morning outing. I even made it into Braxton for their Annual Fireman’s Fund Flea Market. A great time on the road. Get out and enjoy it often.

Don’t forget that May 26 - June 3 is officially British Car Week.

Here are opportunities to get yours out of the garage during May and join members of the EMC:

MAY 12, 2007 - Mike and Alice Glore's Garage Visit / Braxton MS
Mike and Alice Glore have evaluated the EMC’s propensity for disaster and agreed that we appear harmless and safe. On May 12th the EMC will travel down to Braxton finding the most hidden and out of the way roads to get there. Those in the Jackson area, we’ll meet in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on Highway 49 in Richland MS at 10:00am. Bring a bucket of the Colonel or surprise us with your own special recipe.

MAY 18-19, 2007 - Sports Cars at Buck Creek / Helena AL
The Birmingham British Car Club has made a move for 2007 to the hamlet of Helena AL. Folks that have missed this show in the past have really missed a great weekend and the new location looks like a win-win for everyone. This is mixed show with cars from most old world countries attending. A real event!

MAY 26, 2007 - EMC Drive Thru History / The River City Tour
EMC’s Drive Thru History has been a great way to get the top down and that far-away look in your eyes as we travel the highways and byways of the state. The Mapmiester Ron has turned to planning over to Pat and Barbara Cashman for this year’s tour. We'll start out from Rocky Springs at 8:30am and wind south then north with a little west and east thrown in to get us back to Vicksburg for our overnight stay. The host hotel is the Hampton Inn & Suites on Clay Street, tel 601-636-6100. People should make reservations now and refer to the English Motoring Club and confirmation #82092519. A block of rooms has been blocked at a discounted rate.
